A SERIES OF THINGS TO GET YOU CLOSER TO HAVING THAT JE NE SAIS QUOI

My Favorite Five - Dec 15' 14

At our house it's officially Christmakkah Season (Christmas & Hanukkah)!!!

Here is how to mash it all together (with a little bump essentials too)

1_ 3-D MATERNITY SHIRT - for Christmas. I love playing around the bump by accentuating it with accessories. Making the ornament 3-D is pretty amusing to me.

FIBER OPTIC TREE

- When I first moved to NYC my mom bought be a tiny fiber optic tree for my tiny NYC apt. Even tho I now have a much bigger apt, 11 years later, I still love my little fiber optic tree! The best part is that it only takes 2 steps to set up. A) Get it off the shelf in my closet B) Insert the tree into the stand and plug in! DONE!

FIBER OPTIC TREE

- When I first moved to NYC my mom got me a tiny fiber optic tree for my tiny NYC apartment. 11 years later I have a much bigger apartment but still love my simple, small tree. I can set it up in minutes and the glow of the fiber optic lights is still fun to watch in the dark. I have a feeling when the bump FINALLY arrives, s/he will like it too.

CHIC MENORAH

 - We discovered this menorah at a candle shop in Woodstock and could not stop thinking of it. Finally Ari found one closer to home on Avenue J.  The white porcelain camels are so chic. Camels are also part of the nativity scene, so it's a perfect Christmakkah menorah

PERSONALIZED POUCH

- My

friend, Jill Broduer, makes these really hot pouches in leather. They are custom made so you can have your personal mark or initials monogrammed on it. Recently she made this one with a Star of David which would make a really cool Hanukkah gift.

QUILTED DUVET COVER

- Not only has nesting set in, but so has winter. I foresee a lot of time spent in bed (even if not necessarily sleeping) I think West Elm has some of the most stylish bedding options. This quilted duvet cover in Grey is incredibly cozy.

2_ HEALTH ESSENTIALS - These whole food supplements have kept me incredibly healthy through out my pregnancy. I thought they were great supplements before I was pregnant but very happy to have them available during this prenatal time. I want to make sure the baby is getting all of the nutrition it is supposed to and this gives me peace of mind that I'm offering it everything I can when my diet does not. Get

Juice Plus here

PRINTED SHEETS

- Some people love white beds, and I get that. It's like a big fluffy cloud. But I love getting into multiple prints and textures and colors. Hence, I love these dot sheets from West Elm in Slate to go with the light grey duvet cover. Ready for bed!!!

4_ EURO PILLOWS - I am a little late to the game with this one, but better late than never. Euro Size Pillows are my new bedding essential. They are great support when laying in bed reading or watching a move, and they look fantastic. These

shams in a grey clover

like pattern are another addition to the nesting project.

5_ WINTER BOOTS - come in many shapes and sizes. But since slipping these on, I don't know that I will take them off. They are so comfortable and look great with everything. These are definitely worth the splurge.

1_ SWIMMING - At 9 months pregnant it's still very important to exercise even if you feel like you can't move. Also, it's pretty common to wake up just feeling achy. Swimming is the answer!!! I like these TYR swim caps to keep my locks dry (and it's required at my pool anyway!)

2_ FALL FLOWERS - Chinese Lanterns. These aren't the easiest to come by but if you do - get them. They are magical flowers. It's the perfect decor for $10 to add a touch of fall to your home.

3_ HUMOROUS MATERNITY CLOTHING - I love dressing up the bump with dresses that have bows, so why not these cheeky shirts by MamaGama

4_ RECYCLED PUMPKIN - We bought a huge pumpkin for our front stoop in September. It served as a great Fall decoration through Halloween and now the Thanksgiving season. With Christmakah approaching, it's time to go. Though how to give it a proper good buy before the compost heap? Use it as a champagne bucket for Thanksgiving dinner!!!

5_ KITCHEN STORAGE - As we nest and get this entire house ready for this tiny baby, inventive storage is my new favorite thing. These over the cabinet baskets might be my favorite because they require no assembly or installation. Hang over the cabinet door. Done.

1_ NESTING is certainly what I'm doing at 33 weeks pregnant. The maternal instincts have kicked in and I'm making a cozy, comfortable place for the baby to be. In Brooklyn, even tho it's a little roomier than Manhattan, savy space saving skills are still required. I have searched all over for furniture from antiques to crate & barrel, but Ikea still rules when it comes to space saving furniture. The

HENNES

shoe cabinet actually looks nice/ grown up and is perfect for some quick storage by the doorway for things like winter accessories as we head out with our winter baby.

FADING GIGOLO

needs to move to the top of your moving watching list, pronto. If you did not see it in theaters this past summer, Autumn is even more apropos. I don't want to spoil the plot but I fell in love with John Turturro after watching this. It's the kind of movie you wish would never end.

3_ MATERNITY COATS =

CAPES

is what I discovered this week. As I head into the home stretch with an already big and still growing bump I had to figure out how to face the elements, stylishly. I used to not like capes so much because I thought they made me look pregnant. But when you are pregnant - they look really cute over the bump!

4_

SPACE ODDITY

is rocking my world right now. I wake up singing it. Maybe it's because so many people reference babies moving in your stomach to aliens. In some ways it is very "alien", but more than that it truly is one of the sweetest feelings in the entire world. In any case, David Bowie rules.

BABY FURNITURE

doesn't have to be so baby. I love this item from Pottery Barn Kids (and I didn't know I liked stuff from Pottery barn ?!?!) I love the open design for items pretty enough to display along with drawer space. Great Concept.

RACHEL COMEY CHECKOUT ZIP CLUTCH

is so cool. As you know, I lived in my Rachel Comey Comrad Shoeties all summer and now excited to see what she is doing in the bag arena. It stays in line with her "offbeat charm".

2_

KUNK FU HUSTLE

by Stephen Chow is a cult classic must to add to your list of great films. It was playing at

BAM

over the weekend so I had a date with my baby's daddy to see it since he loves Kung Fu and I love anything Chinese. You know it's good when you walk out and see everyone mimicking the kung fu moves from the movie - us included. My move was the "Lion Roar". Now you have to watch it to find out :)

3_ EMBELLISHED SWEATSHIRTS are even better than plain sweatshirts! Thank god for this trending staple. It's so comfy, warm and fits bumps. Then you have designer brands like

Christopher Kane

which make this "CutAway Shoulder Embellished Sweatshirt". It's one of my favorite things right now.

4_

THE WHITE ALBUM

is another cult classic that will never get old. I cleaned out the house all weekend or what some call "nesting". The White Album was part of the cleaning soundtrack so it's on my mind. It's also special to me because there is one song with the baby's possible name (if it's a girl)  Any guesses???

5_ SUEDE SNEAKERS from

Tod's

are one of my new favorite shoes this season. The designer sneaker trend is right up there with the sweatshirt trend -- BRING IT ON!

FRENCH FRIDAY #54: AU NATUREL

LA TASSE DE CAFE | FASHIONABLE FRENCH VOCABULARY

Au Naturel
French Pronounciation:  | oh nah-tyu-rel |

Definition :
in the natural state, plain, naked!

So, Miss Jenée sais quoi and I spent the most amazing relaxing weekend together in the Catskills last weekend, and I learned that because of her current state (eh hem), she really prefers to do things, like brush her teeth and hang out in the kitchen, au naturel.

What's au naturel you ask? Well, in English, it has come to mean pretty much one thing - naked! In French, however, it doesn't just refer to the nakedness of someone's body, but also the "nakedness" of one's face, for example, if they wear no make-up. It can also describe food that is served simply, without all kinds of sauce. In fact, the word for "plain" in French is "nature" [nah-tyur]. So, for example, in my favorite aisle in French grocery stores - the yogurt aisle!!! - you'll see "yaourt nature" and "yaourt à la fraise", for example. I don't discriminate. I love them ALL. I also love Jenée sais quoi both "au naturel" and flavored with strawberries-  uh, I meant clothes! ;) Ha ha!

Might Amy Lynn and Simone understand the "subtle" differences the expression au naturel takes on in French and English?

Amy Lynn: I'm going to the gym now. Like, bye!

Simone: OMG, are you going au naturel?

Amy Lynn: OMG, like, no! Does it look like it? I'm decked out in 100% Lulu lemon gear.

Simone: Uh, no. Although, of all people, you WOULD go to the gym naked, I meant sans make-up!

Amy Lynn: OMG, can I really go naked?

Simone:Mon dieu.

This reminds me of a very interesting story Jenée said quoi told me last weekend about a Cajun's definition of au naturel when it comes to cooking... Take it away, Miss Jenée sais quoi!

Bonne week-end, y'all!
Mademoiselle Love

............................
Jenée Sais Quoi here:

Yes, it's true. Mademoiselle Love knows me very well and there are few secrets between us. During out weekend together she got to experience my full pregnant state. Little disclosure here: As a big pregnant lady - the au naturel state is ideal when your body starts to take on this new shape which is slightly uncomfortable to say the least. Modesty sort of goes out the window and comfort rules.

But about the Cajun au naturel food... Oh yes, as you know I was recently in Louisiana for a baby shower. My father's friend, a fisherman, caught and cooked red fish for me all on the same day (these are the kinds of things I miss most about home). Before cooking it, he told me how he was going to prepare it. He said it was going to be VERY SIMPLE. The first thing that popped into my head was, "olive oil, lemon, salt & pepper and maybe some garlic".  As he went on to describe the process and this is what was involved: Black Pepper, Red Pepper, Tony Chacherie's Seasoning, Garlic, Butter, Lemon, Onions, Red Peppers, Green Peppers and Yellow Peppers. I had to laugh to myself as I forgot what a SIMPLE dish means to a Cajun. That is how Cajuns cook au naturel.

The Origin of "La Tasse de Café", French for "the cup of coffee"
is a morning radio show out of Ville Platte, Louisiana on KVPI-FM
My dad listens to it regularly to keep up with his Cajun French as he now doesn't have much opportunity to speak it in Louisiana where the language is disappearing.
Since I'm from Cajun land in Louisiana - with a serious interest in fashion - and Mademoiselle Love, a Louisiana girl too, - is in love with everything French and everything coffee - it was only fitting we pay tribute to our roots and our new found loves with a weekly Fashion French lesson.

Tune in to KVPI every Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning at 8:45AM (NY time) for your Cajun  French lesson and come back to the blog every Friday for more Fashionable French lessons.
