Kustawi Bags put a Smile on your Face for many Reasons
Fashion Cliff Notes | Handbag of the Moment

*** This is a ReRun from 10/15/13 - It's fashion week, trying to launch a company, and grow a baby... just recycling some time here & a great post and product

How often do you get the chance to become an activist, just by following a guilty pleasure?
How often does shopping for handbags empower an impoverished community, offer a fair wage to women and provide a better future for their families?

I am proud to share with you, a collaboration with Right2 Thrive and bring the beautiful artisan crafted handbags created by their Empowerment Program students branded “Kustawi“, to vendors and friends in the U.S.

The last time I saw my friend Janet she was carrying a Kustawi bag (well at the time it had no name). Since I have an eye like a hawk for a well designed bag, I started to ask her more about it. By the end of the night we began our collaboration on what we now call Kustawi handbags.

Through my design and merchandising skills and Janet's ability to inspire and empower people, we branded the artisan created bags and jewelry as a means of giving the women the opportunity to sell them and create a business for themselves.

Kustawi bags are made of easily accessible materials such as magazines, calendars and posters. The paper is cut into precise strips, which are hand rolled into beads and varnished to obtain durability and a surface luster. Woven together, the beads create the unique outer shell of the bag. The end result is certainly a trick of the eye, surprisingly luxurious and far away from where it began.

THE PROTECTOR HANDBAG

HANDBAG OF THE MOMENT | FASHION CLIFF NOTES

Last week we stayed on a Ranch in Winter Park, Colorado where we attended the beautiful wedding of our friends', Rick and Jackie. As I packed for the trip I tried to imagine which dress would be most fitting for not only the occasion but also the landscape. The hand-stamped brown & ivory print felt like rustic Colorado yet the Silk fabric made it glamorous.

The outfit was complete with an antique gold and crystal necklace and The Canal Street Clutch from Mignon Faget

Here I'm using the clutch like Grace Kelly used her Birkin. Which fashionista gets it???

Every Spring and Summer you can count on one trend: Perforation. It always shows up in some form. With these new dresses from Katybelle, I styled them with these airy trends in the way of a wicker chapeau, lacy gloves, and open metal work ring.

Last week Mademoiselle Love and I wore the same dresses but styled slightly different. As you can see, a small change in accessories gives you an entirely new outfit.  Browse here to see more ways to wear these styles from Katybelle

YOU CAN TAKE THE GIRL OUT OF THE CITY

But you can't take the City out of the Girl
HANDBAG OF THE MOMENT | FASHION CLIFF NOTES

This Weeks Handbag of the Moment:
The Canal St Clutch by Mignon Faget

Of all the handbag silhouettes, a clutch has the most attitude. No matter how many zippers and studs a tote, satchel or hobo can handle, the clutch will always be the bag that says "Yeah, so what."

The clutch holds almost nothing : no extra pair of walking shoes, no bottle of water, no laptop. There is an air of confidence and power that comes from holding on to practically nothing. It also gives your hands something lady like to do. (Ever see Kate Middleton's hands idle?!) Lastly, it adds a fashionable touch to your dining table. If the table is big enough go ahead and adorn the setting with your Pochette.

On this spring weekend in the Catskills in upstate New York, vintage Levi's and the Canal Street Clutch accompanied me to Peekamoose Restaurant

While Peekamoose is rather upscale, it is nestled among the casual, laid back villages that comprise the Catskill community. Hence, this new handbag collection from Mignon Faget is the perfect mix of hippie and chic for such an occasion. (cross body featured here)

It's ideal for a city girl in the country or a country girl in the city... still not sure which one I am sometimes.

FRENCH FRIDAY #43: Pochette

LA TASSE DE CAFE | FASHIONABLE FRENCH VOCABULARY
girls drinking coffee, cafe, coffee, talking, carré, coffee talk, la tasse de cafePochette
French Pronounciation:  |pō shet|

Definition : clutch handbag

As I sip my home-brewed iced coffee, I thought I'd talk to you about a freakin' cute French word...

The word pochette may be super cute, but clutches aren't exactly my style, I have to admit. However, the fact that it means "little pocket" makes me want to rock a pochette. Let's see what Amy Lynn has to say about this one...

...
Amy Lynn:  OMG I have a hot date tonight with François. Can I, like, borrow a sexy clutch from you?

Simone: Like, eew! I don't own a single clutch. Something that's called a pochette is never gonna hold all the trash I carry around with me all day!

Amy Lynn: Uh, ok. Why you gotta be so practical all the time? No wonder you're not getting any dates! Boring!

Simone:  Anyway, whatever happened to Pierre? You're such a two-timing bimbo! Get your own pochette

Yikes! I guess it's true that the pochette is not the most practical handbag out there. Check in next week to hear the rest of Amy Lynn's boy drama!

Jenée Sais Quoi here:

If you've ever been in the market to shop for handbags you have probably come across the word, Pochette. Louis Vuitton probably has the most famous Pochette around:
clutch, handbag, pouchette, LV
As a handbag designer - I've noticed it's come to mean more than just a clutch in the traditional sense : a bag held by your hand. In the case of LV it has a detachable strap so it can also be worn on the shoulder. Also, I find it more and more common to find a little Pochette  inside large tote bags. It's usually attached by a cording of some sort and serves as a detachable wallet-like piece.  One can call it a small wallet or you can sound chic and in the know and refer to it as a POCHETTE  !! You're welcome.

The Origin of "La Tasse de Café", French for "the cup of coffee"
is a morning radio show out of Ville Platte, Louisiana on KVPI-FM
My dad listens to it regularly to keep up with his Cajun French as he now doesn't have much opportunity to speak it in Louisiana where the language is disappearing.
Since I'm from Cajun land in Louisiana - with a serious interest in fashion - and Mademoiselle Love, a Louisiana girl too, - is in love with everything French and everything coffee - it was only fitting we pay tribute to our roots and our new found loves with a weekly Fashion French lesson.

WEEKEND READY WITH MIGNON FAGET

Wild Side Expressed
HANDBAG OF THE MOMENT | FASHION CLIFF NOTES

During my last trip to New Orleans to attend Fashion Week New Orleans, I visited the Mignon Faget headquarters for a tour of their offices and jewelry production space. It was then that I was introduced to their newest collection, a handbag collection. Being a handbag designer, I immediately dug in!

At first I was confused how a brand known for it's jewelry could have handbags void of hardware. After speaking to members of the team and Mignon, I discovered a surprising trait tucked in the history of the Mignon Faget aesthetic - one with a very bohemian flair. I find it very exciting to find things or meet people which appear to have a very polished and prim surface, yet have a nomadic, gypsy spirit. Having these little mysteries about oneself is certainly an element of je ne sais quoi.

Taking a look back to the Mignon Faget 60s archives, I discovered a Mignon with a wilder side. This collection recaptures the youth of the Mignon Faget brand. These styles are a natural vegetable tan leather with a very soft hand. They are completely
unpretentious while exuding quality. Special touches like a blue suede interior show thoughtful consideration to tie back to it's iconic blue felt jewelry bags.

This past weekend I threw on a double denim outfit with a vintage camel colored velor jacket. The Magazine St crossbody was the ideal bag for this look. It's easy going casual flair has that effortless appeal, which looks like you aren't trying too hard, yet appear very put together. In addition to it's charming aesthetic, it's the perfect size for a weekend outing.

Now I'm ready for festival season!!! - It may be called the Magazine St Crossbody but it will be perfect for Main St at Coachella (with a bit less clothing)

Last Week at Fashion Week New Orleans every outfit was carefully curated for each Fête. Perfect March New Orleans weather made easy to be fashionable while not freezing or melting. Another aspect that made it easy to be fashionable was this black & white python hobo by Anthony LucianoIt's an oversized hobo which can cover almost the entire side of one's torso. The short handle also lends itself to being handheld. A python bag this huge is just overstated luxury. It's voluminous AND speaks volumes.  The fringe tassels add that special Anthony Luciano touch which he is known for: intricate details and moving parts.

CAMPOS HANDBAGS

Sporty Chic, Made in Brooklyn and Just Cool
Handbag of the Moment | Fashion Cliff notes

Sometimes a picture in your instagram feed actually makes you stop not only to double tap it and <3 it, but also to go as far as checking out it's associated website!   Campos handbags definitely caught my eye with this nutmeg colored leather and sporty stripe. This is totally my kind of bag. It's a classic, uncomplicated shape, but has a twist of cool with the dual tone stripes.

This bag is trending in so many ways -

Have you heard of the Sporty Chic trend sweeping Spring and Summer 2014 ???  This bag will fit right in with your designer sweats.

It's also Local (not sure if it's Organic too?:) All the bags are made at a small handbag factory in Brooklyn by a really awesome guy named Roy.  Years ago I used to go to Roy's factory to have bags made. I would ride my Rock Hopper bike over to the Navy Yard and apparently look famished by the time I got there. He was so kind, he would offer me to make a sandwich as his kitchenette in his office.  I usually took him up on the offer.

Now Roy Campos has a namesake collection of bags with the help of designer Toni Hacker.  All leather and hardware are sourced in America and sewn right here in Brooklyn, New York. There are many more styles with customizable options, but this one is my favorite... bag of the moment.

Vintage bags Hold Secrets of a Past Life
HANDBAG OF THE MOMENT | FASHION CLIFF NOTES

My grandmother had the best style and the best time. She always told me she lived a life in which no one could say she did not have a good time. This evening bag I now own is not only vintage, but it belonged to my grandmother. Part of the joy of owning vintage pieces is imagining all the fun they saw and wondering which kindred spirit loved it before you. Though, with this evening bag I already know some of the secrets it holds. My grandmother loved a good party, a cigarette, a card game and a cocktail with a maraschino cherry. I'd say this bag stayed out late many evenings and took home lots of card game winnings.

It seems the last time she used it was right before I was born. Inside there was still a ticket from a political dinner in 1979 to support a mayoral candidate in our town. What I do know is that they served steak and the candidate's name was "Bubba" !!! The rest I have to imagine. I imagine she pulled this bag out of the custom made closets my grandfather built for her to finish off her fabulous look. She gossiped with the other fine ladies of Eunice and made a date for their next card game.

This vintage black patent leather frame bag is my bag of the moment as it's the season for cocktail bags and the season to be with family. My grandmother passed on to me the spirit of fun and left me with the perfect accessory to "carry" it out.

WINTER DREAM BAG

WHITE MINK HANDBAG

One of my favorite handbag designers, Anthony Luciano, is becoming a staple on Jenée Sais Quoi. This is the third feature, but I'm sure you can understand why. Over the last few months, just looking at this bag actually made me excited for winter and snow. Today we actually got snow in NYC and this bag is way better!

I imagine a bag like this with your best holiday outfits. A red velvet dress and this bag would be stunning. It's like a super fancy, modern muff to keep your iPhone warm.

Mr. Luciano's bags are constructed around vintage frames of the most luxurious materials. In this case, it's made of white mink fur with a vintage crystal brooch.

Let it Snow.

COCKTAIL BAGS

A Real Party Accessory
Fashion Cliff Notes | Handbag of the Moment

Over the weekend I met some girl friends for a bit of late night perusing at the MET. We went especially to see the JAR exhibit: a show of intricate jewels dripping in diamonds. Because, what is more fun than drooling over stuff you cannot have? I suppose, admiring something from a distance is what this is called. Well, after contemplating all of this great cocktail jewelry I inevitably starting thinking about cocktail bags. Many of his jeweled sculptures were derived from flowers and pretty straight forward.  Of all the pieces in the show, those that made the best impression on me were the ones with a sense of humor. While these were also derived from nature, like animals and vegetables, these had a more surreal twist to them which I find more suitable as cocktail attire.

This brings me to choosing the appropriate cocktail accessories: think conversation piece. Cocktail Parties are filled primarily with 2 things: Cocktails and Conversation. The cocktails help to get the conversation going, but a clever accessory can do the same thing.

If you choose to go with the classic little black dress for this holiday season of cocktail parties, then consider pairing it with a real conversation piece. Judith Leiber bags are the archetypal minaudière for ladies who cocktail, but for a modern girl, these designers are straight up.

Left Top: Kustawi - these bags from Kenya will give you plenty to converse about
Left Center: Marni - the entire collection has a great quirky sensibility
Left Bottom: Maison Martin Margiela is always sleek and secretive

Center Top: Charlotte Olympia - one of the funniest accessory designers in the market
Center Center: Olympia Le-Tan - girl power
Center Bottom: Diane Von Furstenberg- sealed with a kiss in a hot color

Right Top: Marc Jacobs - this 2 tone look is cheeky
Right Center: Charlotte Olympia - when all else fails, talk about time and the weather
Right Bottom: Mathew Williamson - his gypset style makes you look well travelled

Most of these Clutches can all be found on Net-A-Porter

BLOWING MINDS ONE HANDBAG AT A TIME

Anthony Luciano Handbags: Avant Garde, Daring, & Mind Blowing
Fashion Cliff Notes | Handbag of the Moment
If this is not a conversation piece, then you really have nothing to talk about.  Bags from Anthony Luciano range from simply elegant to seriously avant-garde. I would have to say this one falls on the scale closer to avant-garde. It pushes the boundaries of handbag design and is certainly not easily found in the market.  A handbag such as this one is for the truly daring. It takes a brave personality to wear feathers, not on Bourbon Street.  It is for the fashion collector who already owns all of the basics and staples and needs a mind blowing piece. This custom creation of Leather & Hackle feathers is guaranteed to become the pièce de sistance of one's accessory wardrobe.

THE EXOTIC MINAUDIERE

More than a Souvenir
Fashion Cliff Notes | Bag of the Moment
Free People Metal Handbag

This artisanal, hammered metal bag finally has it's moment in the spot light. If I were to say I discovered this bag while at a bazaar in India, no one would find it surprising. It certainly looks like a souvenir from an exotic vacation, which would wear great in this distant local, yet could be hard to pull off while back in the states.

Though, when I found this while shopping at Free People (similar), not only was it appropriate for the eclectic variety of styles found here, it was completely appropriate for this moment in time of the hard cased bag, aka the Minaudière

This bag is a fantastic accessory for this fall & winter and will take you through 2014. It will add an exotic touch to your look and shine to your shoulder.

It is so the bag of the moment, finally.

SAY MY NAME (or INITIALS)

Handcrafted Leather Pouches by Jill Brodeur
Fashion Cliff Notes | Handbags

Personalization with a Personal Touch is what Jill Brodeur provides with her first signature collection of handbags. This is Jill's debut namesake collection after years of working for corporations that sold her handbags by the tens of thousands across the nation. Knowing what women want and expect in a handbag, she has developed a collection of leather pouches complete with personalized initials and motifs. She understands that women need basic items to tote around all their nonsense, but still want it to be unique. Hence, she has selected the best Italian leathers in an array of colors and uses the finest zippers to create a beautiful and durable product. Then using a technique she developed, she adds your initials or motif for a personal touch.

It's a great pouch to keep in a large handbag or to use on it's own as a Clutch.

In the age of mass market and everyone looking the same, a little personalization goes a long way.

MASTER HANDBAG CREATOR - ANTHONY LUCIANO

True Luxury Still does Exist
Fashion Cliff Notes | Handbags

Anthony Luciano is a rare designer who actually hand crafts his creations. These days knowing how to make a pattern, much less know how to sew, is not a requirement to be a designer, but it should be. Anthony makes everything by hand in his Atelier in New York's garment district using local products from the neighborhood.

Now, I'll let the video do the rest. Contact Anthony Luciano here.

Handbags that Flirt

HANDBAG OF THE DAY: Felix Ray Clutch
Humorous, Flirty, & Good Disguise

Sometimes a handbag is great because it fits your body a certain way or it is thoughtfully organized. For me, sometimes what makes a great handbag is one that makes me laugh. It's why designers like Charlotte Olympia and Anya Hindmarch are among my favorites. While some people choose to wear jokes across their bum, I find Handbags are a perfect canvas to display a bit of humor.

This Felix Ray clutch has loads of character. In just 50 square inches of surface it says I'm not afraid to be cute and just might bat my eyelashes when I like something. I'm thinking it could be a really fun Halloween mask, right?

Island State of Mind

TODAY'S HANDBAG FEATURE: CARIBBEAN JOE

Floral Prints, Island spirit & Summer Love

In the spirit of summer and it's fleeting days, I present a Summer Handbag collection from 2009. It's not retro just yet, but it does have a 60s retro print! This is from a collection of handbags I designed years ago called Caribbean Joe. Obviously it's inspired by Island Life with a name like Caribbean Joe so these bags love summer.... or does Summer love these bags. ? .
This is a page from my Portfolio. More of my work like this is on my website.

For this collection I combined some unlikely materials - sporty cotton webbing with a corn husk basket weave. As a designer, I believe combining ideas that would likely be a contradiction with the possibility to clash is what usually produces the most innovative product.

I loved the effect of the webbing all sewn together to create a tote bag.

Happy Last Days of Summer and make use of your Straw bags before it's time to pack them away for winter (remember my last bit of handbag advice - don't do yourself the disservice of carrying around a straw bag in Winter).
