I LOVE FANNY PACKS AND I'M NOT AFRAID TO SAY IT

I LOVE FANNY PACKS AND I'M NOT AFRAID TO SAY IT

The 80s were full of fanny packs and they were the kiss of death to your popularity. I am still scarred from that today and feel I have to justify my love and support of this underused accessory. Also note, I surround myself with cool, beautiful things so this adoration for the underrated bag is whole-hearted.

Here I round up some favorites, but the market is totally underserved. Designers get to work!!!!!

CUDDLE UP WITH THIS BOOK

Reminiscing about my teenage years in the 90s, as an Advanced Maternal Aged woman

As crunch time approached, I could not read one more baby book, baby blog, baby app... I needed a fun read, something that felt like "me" again. Luckily my friend who works for a publishing house passed along one of their newest releases to me, "Champagne Supernovas" by Maureen Callahan, and it could not have been more perfect. This book not only made me feel like ME again, but it made me feel like teenage me! This book took me back to my coming of age in the early 90s when my junior high crush schooled me on Alternative music, when I studied fashion magazines with great care to craft new looks and when I first came to NYC discovering the West Village. It was one of the most exciting times in my life and I can not believe I am old enough to now be reading it as a piece of pop history. But here I was, big and pregnant in my Advanced Maternal Age reminiscing about my teenage years. I highly recommend it to anyone with the slightest interest in fashion and 90's culture. As I turned to the last page, I thought, "there is no way it can end now?" Then Callahan summed up 90's fashion and it's influence in one perfect sentence.

Feeling inspired, I pulled out this black crepe dress I bought while on a trip in New York City in 1997! Amazingly it fit over my very pregnant belly. Even the accessories were a throwback to the era. Crystal necklaces were very popular when I was 13. I bought one at the mall and felt ultra hip when I wore it. My friend Faye, of Fashion Hound, lent me her favorite crystal necklace for this outfit. It was my laid back, herion chic, downtown meets uptown, Kate Moss inspired look that made me feel like ME again.  I think this is what they call "life imitating art".

LEATHER GOES TO WORK

How to Style Leather Pants for the Office

Grabbing a cup of Coffee on my Way

The last time I featured these leather pants, it was styled for a very different occasion: the Gaultier exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum. It was "fitting" and also only possible to wear for a few hours as the corset was -negative- skin tight.

Though, as leather pants are the de rigueur bottoms of the season, I'm trying to work them into all facets of life.

Now it's off to the day job (which has something to do with handbags;).

How to do????

A silk, dove colored, button down top with gold buttons is incredibly sophisticated giving the leather a professional slant.

The navy cardigan adds that preppy goodie two-shoes flavor that I love to trick people with.

Then top it off with pink pearls and sparkly earrings (since it's the holidays).

Heels would be great with this outfit, but it's freezing in NYC AND the sidewalks are icy!!!

Note: sometimes comfort, like not falling on your derrière, is more fashionable than the perfect shoe. Though, I love these Chuckies Pointy brown loafers in any case.

and that's How to do: Leather Goes to Work

WENDY WILLIAMS FRONT ROW (MATERNITY LEAVE RERUN:)

Fashion Cliff Notes | Outfit Ideas

All that Glitters Really is Gold

Q:How you doin'?

Yes I had to go there. I'm having a case of

Wendy

mania right now. This morning I was awoken at 6 AM, escorted to Chelsea and found myself at the Wendy Williams show!!!! Ari said, "Surprise & Enjoy" and left me there in the VIP line with my other friend, Wendy, to spend the morning on the set of the show.

Thankfully he advised me that for this surprise outing I needed to dress "

Fun Fun

".  Thanks to the

seasonal closet swap

I diligently conducted over the weekend, my sequin, camo holiday party pants were front and center. I thought, "now these are really fun".

(Fashion Cliff Note: Sequins are always fun. Sequins on your

derrière

 are CRAZY FUN.)

So if you are going to the Wendy Williams show and want the chance to sit front row try this:

Sparkly Pants

Bright Top (remember small patterns do not work well on TV)

Flashy Jewelry (but tasteful)

Cool boots

& Fun Hair (like a side braid)

Oh and even Wendy noticed herself. During commercial break, my Daytime TV idol pointed at my pants and mouthed, "i love those pants" while hair and makeup attended to her. Later she walked right up to me and gave me an Insta-glam prize for the outfit. I now own something Wendy touched - as I mentioned - Wendy Mania.

FYI - The Wendy Show is the biggest motivation for getting me into the cardio room where the TVs are at the gym. So if you need some inspiration to put sequins on your

derrière, only Wendy can make you laugh out loud while on the stair stepper.

A: I'm doin' fabulous.

A Shot from TV

Not quite sure what we were doing here - Was star struck for the first 30 minutes

INSPIRED BY JEAN PAUL GAULTIER - I Can't Breathe

This weekend the Brooklyn Museum was abound with the fashion crowd. As we stood in line for the

"Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk"

exhibit, I couldn't help but to giggle and smile at all the leather, studded sneakers and "it" bags in the que.

I too was part of this leather clad crowd (so I guess i was giggling at myself). My new Zara leather and zipper tights made their debut along with an old corset from Dolce & Gabbana that only comes out on very special occasions - the kind when I don't have to eat or breathe.

I suppose the giggling is because it's sort of ridiculous to get so gussied up for an event in which all eyes are on the exhibit. Yet, the smile was because

it's so much fun to get gussied up.

If fashion doesn't offer you just a little fun, then, that's sad. On this day I pretended to be a hot, sexy, vixen who wears tight animal hide and Madonna style undergarments. Playing dress-up doesn't have to end when you graduation from grade school.

P.S. You have until Feb 23, 2014 to make it to the exhibit and put on your sexiest outfit !

A Gangster Fairytale: Magical, Rich and Racy

On a recent outing with photographer

Peter Koloff

 of

Black Dot Creative

, we explored the park while I played dress up.

This outfit was inspired by 20s style Boardwalk Empire and one of my favorite fairytales: Little Red Riding Hood.

The rich, red velvet cape coat and faceted beaded hat are a stark contrast to the dead, wintery

landscape which also served as inspiration for the chosen outfit. This ensemble conjures up a sense of magic and myth as sparkly turbans are usually reserved for the mystical while the long red coat teeters on ecclesiastical garb. Under all of this plushness a racy outfit is revealed. The suggestive outfit is symbolic of what lies beneath the cloaks of fairytales and clergy.

On the Last Night of Chanukkah...

Fashion Cliff Notes | Outfit Ideas

hanukkah outfit, dkny, lacy stockings, couples, holiday outfit, blue dress

On Chanukkah I like to wear blue.

Perhaps it's the way some wear Red & Green on Christmas (opposing colors on the color wheel that are supposed to never look good together!)

This Chanukah I had the perfect dress from a DKNY Sample Sale. It's a dark, moody blue with a full length zipper along the front. It's also roomy with a cinched elastic waist - perfect for all the fried latkas and donuts I will consume for 8 days!!!  It's also super covered up for the faint of heart that might be at the party ;)  It's better to air on the conservative side for some of Ari's family parties. Though since my legs stay under the table, I like to get a little crazy with netted stockings and black patent leather heels.

What do you wear to Chanukkah Parties???

HOW TO STYLE THE BUMP WITH ROCK & ROLL

OUTFIT IDEAS | FASHION CLIFF NOTES

Last month I had the opportunity to work with the founders of

WellRoundedNY

and photographer,

Jonica Moore.

Myself and the bump were featured on a segment called Bump Envy!  - what would I wear???

I went with a sexy Rock & Roll approach.

This dress was something I picked up a few years ago when the Mullet dress made it's return.  It's funny how last year I was over it, but now it has a completely new shape with my expanding silhouette so it feels new to me. This tight number might even make a better maternity dress than non-maternity.

The black leather trim makes it edgy, especially with a bump. Paired with my new

Fiorintini + Baker

leather boots

I am ready to go to CBGBs. Oh wait - it's closed - Ill just stay home and put the Clash on instead. That way I can take naps in between dance sessions.

HOW TO STYLE THE BUMP IN STRIPES

OUTFIT IDEAS | FASHION CLIFF NOTES

JuJu's Boutique_ Stripe dress_ Maternity style_ Style the Bump_ Fall Fashion_ Je Ne Sais Quoi

When October began, I posted this dress decked out with Orange & Brown Accessories.  See outfit

here

. To switch things up and give this dress an entirely new look I simply changed the accessories. The bump accessory stays :)  On a warm day like we had in New York yesterday (hello 72 degrees!) this outfit would have been trés appropriate. For later this week, a cardigan, denim or leather jacket would provide the warmth needed on this sleeveless dress.

What's most fun about this outfit is the mix of materials & colors: Black & white Stripes with Blue tights and Diamond graphic print.

This infinity scarf lends itself to multiple shapes: Doubled, Long and as a Head scarf.  There are even more possibilities but I ran out of steam.

HOW TO STYLE THE BUMP ALA KIMONO

OUTFIT IDEAS | FASHION CLIFF NOTES

Finding outfits for formal or dressy occasions are challenging for most. Now throw a bump into the mix, and we have a real challenge.

Yet, at

JuJu's

I found the most elegant combination

with Jordan's help, of course. It starts with this

Ivory Shift

dress with gold embroidery detail at the neck line. We all know the shift is not only a groovy shape from the 60's but also a good silhouette for hiding some extra pounds (accommodating a protruding baby bump!).

Alone this dress is simple and elegant. Now, throw on this shear, printed,

Kimono style open coat

and the elegance factor has increased significantly.

This would be really hot for date night with your

Baby Daddy...

a wedding... or any semi-formal occasion you have on your calendar.

FUR GET ABOUT IT

OUTFIT IDEAS | FASHION CLIFF NOTES

JuJu Boutique_Style the Bump_Maternity Fashion_ Floral Palazzo Pants_ Fur Vest_ Fall Fashion_Blonde chic

Have you noticed yet how much I love furry things?!

When I found this

faux fur

vest at

JuJu's

Boutique I had to build an outfit around it. As Jordan (the manager/ stylist) and I were looking for bump friendly pieces she found these wide elastic waist band

floral pillazzo pants

.

Elastic, Lycra, Spandex - all your friend, bump or no bump

. A solid top would have been the standard choice with such a busy floral print.

But having je ne sais quoi is not about being standard

. So, we searched the boutique for a striped top. With the fur vest, the outfit was complete.

Fur Vests: these have been in vogue for about a decade now. Rachel Zoe really elevated the trend in 2008 with her long shaggy ones. At this point it's safe to say: a fur vest is now a wardrobe staple. It works with separates and dresses. It's a great transition piece for fall or spring (or all winter in Louisiana ;)

BEACH ESSENTIALS with HIDDEN SPF

Outfit Ideas | Fashion Cliff Notes

urban outfitter_bathing suit_ yellow bikini_ sun taker towel_montauk_girl on beach

Recently my friend, Carly, introduced me to a great new product for summer -

The Sun Taker towel

. So I took one for a spin in Montauk a few weeks ago to see if it was as great as it sounded.

The towel in Aqua was a perfect compliment to my new Urban Outfitter high-waist 2 piece. The

ruched bottom

is incredibly stylish for the fearless, and also is great for

bellies that poke out a bit.

The First thing I loved about the SunTaker towel was PACKING!!!

While it acts like a beach towel, it's a fraction of the size leaving more room in your beach bag for trashy novels and other important beach gear.

As you know, I'm a huge fan of the

sarong

for beach wear because they are thin, versatile and stylish. Well, the Suntaker towel is all of these things, but it has the added benefit of blocking harmful UV rays. You gotta keep your skin protected during summer. --- hopefully soon they will add stylish prints to the assortment. (hint hint ;)

So save space, add another layer of protection to your skin - oh and it drys quickly too! ---

Enjoy summer
