Après-ski

Pronounced: [ä-prā-skē ]

Definition: What a surprise!

Have you ever gone skiing and then wondered what on earth

après-ski

was? In case you didn't figure it out, it just means "after-ski" andit's sort of like a happy hour. Since I don't like skiing (it makes me cry!),

après-ski

is

my favorite part of the whole process! However this is not a real French term. It's just something that English speakers made up to sound fancy- what's new?

Amy Lynn:

What a fun day of crying on the mountain! Now I'm ready for a drink! Oh look! There's a happy hour!

Simone:

Remind me to never take your pathetic butt skiing ever again! And by the way, it's called

après-ski

 in your country!

Are you by any chance going skiing this holiday season? Do you actually enjoy it, or do you go just for the hot chocolate and

après-ski?

Merci Beaucoup,

Mademoiselle Love

I must admit I'm totally on board with Mademoiselle Love about skiing. When you grow up in the flat prairie lands of Louisiana, moving downhill at high speeds on thin slivers of epoxy covered fiber glass is no thrill at all. Seriously, no fun. Yet, joining friends at the ski lodge post slopes is very enjoyable. Warm drinks after playing in snow all day is a real treat. I'm sure it feels a bit more deserved after a hard days work but, oh well.

Also,

après-ski is not all about the reward of cocktails, it's very much about the proper attire. It's like evening wear with an alpine twist. So think sleek black outfit with an insanely furry hat or a Beyonce style onesie with a fair isle print and killer puffer boots.

If I did ski this is what I would wear from Katherine Thomas - so

après-ski appropriate too

The Origin of "La Tasse de Café", French for "the cup of coffee"

is a morning radio show out of Ville Platte, Louisiana on

KVPI-FM

My dad listens to it regularly to keep up with his Cajun French as he now doesn't have much opportunity to speak it in Louisiana where the language is disappearing.

Since I'm from Cajun land in Louisiana, with a serious interest in fashion and Mademoiselle Love, a Louisiana girl too, who is head over heels in love with everything French and everything coffee, it was only fitting we pay tribute to our roots and our new found loves.

Tune in to

KVPI

every Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning at 8:45AM (NY time) for your Cajun French lesson and come back to the blog every Friday for more French lessons from Mademoiselle Love. We will discuss useful French  words or expressions for the fashionable girl. To make it even more enjoyable, we will do it over a very fashionable cup of coffee.
