Kustawi Bags put a Smile on your Face for many Reasons
Fashion Cliff Notes | Handbag of the Moment

How often do you get the chance to become an activist, just by following a guilty pleasure?
How often does shopping for handbags empower an impoverished community, offer a fair wage to women and provide a better future for their families?

I am proud to share with you, a collaboration with Right2 Thrive and bring the beautiful artisan crafted handbags created by their Empowerment Program students branded “Kustawi“, to vendors and friends in the U.S.

The last time I saw my friend Janet she was carrying a Kustawi bag (well at the time it had no name). Since I have an eye like a hawk for a well designed bag, I started to ask her more about it. By the end of the night we began our collaboration on what we now call Kustawi handbags.

Through my design and merchandising skills and Janet's ability to inspire and empower people, we branded the artisan created bags and jewelry as a means of giving the women the opportunity to sell them and create a business for themselves.

Kustawi bags are made of easily accessible materials such as magazines, calendars and posters. The paper is cut into precise strips, which are hand rolled into beads and varnished to obtain durability and a surface luster. Woven together, the beads create the unique outer shell of the bag. The end result is certainly a trick of the eye, surprisingly luxurious and far away from where it began.
