How to Have an Adventure in Thailand

This past year Ari and I embarked on one of our biggest adventures yet: Thailand. We stayed for three weeks while Ari studied Thai Massage the International Training Massage School, and I made art and soaked up the culture. Using Trip Advisor, Lonely Planet, and friend's advice, we mapped out our trip. Skype was a great tool to have to make calls to hotels for reservations. Some hotels in Thailand do not have email!

While we were waiting at the JFK airport for our trip to being, the airline called us over the intercom. This made us very nervous as embarking on such a big trip would, hoping that we had everything is place. Their concern was to make sure we had return tickets. Of course, we did and I thought, "why wouldn't we?" About a week later as I fell into the deepest state of utter relaxation on a beach in Ko Chang, I understood why some people may never want to leave Thailand - the whole airline ordeal made complete sense.

The trip was started on the island of Koh Chang. It's one of the closest islands to Bangkok which is where we flew in. Wanting to not waste time traveling just to get to a beach, this is a great choice. I hear the other islands like Ko Phi Phi and Ko Tao are amazing, but they are quite a hike to get to. The beach was a great place to start the trip as jet lag is still an issue. We would wake up around 5, throw on bathing suits, and run down to the beach to watch the sun rise as we floated in the Gulf of Thailand. These moments are some of my favorite moments in all of life! Ko Chang has several beaches to choose from all with distinct personalities. Some are family oriented and others are very remote feeling with a more hippie vibe. Touring the island on motor bike is very entertaining and there are pockets of surprises like waterfalls and hidden cafes in mangrove forests.

If you are used to American prices, Thailand will make you feel very rich. For me this is an essential part to a great relaxing vacation - one where you do not have to be so worried about money. A plate of Pad Thai was $1 and our bungalow on the beach cost $40 a night.

Thailand is called "The Land of Smiles" and it could not be a more appropriate name. The people of Thailand have the most beautiful and inviting smiles. This disarming smile made us feel so warm. I wanted to hug everyone !!!!!!

The food is so tasty and I could eat thai food everyday with out getting tired of it. I took a cooking class one day which I documented here.

After the beach portion of our trip we made our way up to the foothills of the Himalayas where the relaxed city of Chiang Mai is situated. Here Ari earned his certificate in Thai massage and I learned about Buddhist temples, improved my yoga practice and painted stylish Thai women.

We ended the trip just north of here not far from Myanmar on Pun Pun farm. We slept in an adobe house and took baths in the local reservoir. Ari learned to make self sustaining homes from Adobe and I  helped in cocktail projects like making Roselle Wine.

Our last day was a whirlwind tour of Bangkok. As New Yorkers we choose usually to not vacation in other big cities partly because we already think New York is the best big city. Though, the more significant reason is that slowing down is a big reason to leave our lives here.

Are you wondering where to take your Honeymoon? I suggest Thailand. Do you want to travel to an exotic place where you can feel safe? I suggest Thailand.  Leave me a comment if you need any more info on what to do and where to stay.
