French Friday #8: Soirée

This week's French word
by:  Mademoiselle Love
Soirée

pronounced:   | swah - rhay |
 Translation - Party

Today, I'm hanging out at Deluxe in Park Slope, having a perfect latte, in the coolest green cup and I'm thinking about the French word soirée as I head to New Orleans for the weekend.

Perhaps you've used this word before to refer to a party. Well, if so, fabulous! Keep doing that, just like Amy Lynn, who is starting to catch on.

Simone: Where are you going, looking so fancy?

Amy Lynn: I'm going to a super fancy soirée, but you totally can't come!

Simone: OMG, like, why not? I want to go to the fancy soirée! PLEASE!

Amy Lynn: No, Simone. You can't come because you're always so mean to me!

Simone: I'm sorry if I seem mean. I'm just trying to get you to use more French words and to use them correctly. And, girl, you just said soirée!

Amy Lynn: I know you're just, like, trying to help, but sometimes you're so annoying!... Ok, fine. You can come to the fancy soirée with me!

So, yes, in French, the word can refer to a party like it does in English. But did you know that soirée is really just the word for "evening" in French? From now on, use "soirée" to mean party AND evening. You can ask your friends how their soirée was or tell them Bonne soirée ("Have a good evening").

I hope Simone and Amy Lynn have a very bonne soirée tonight. Don't you?

Merci Beaucoup,
Mademoiselle Love

The Origin of "La Tasse de Café", French for "the cup of coffee"
Is a morning radio show out of Ville Platte, Louisiana on KVPI-FM
My dad listens to it regularly to keep up with his Cajun French as he now doesn't have much opportunity to speak it in Louisiana where the language is disappearing.
Since I'm from Cajun land in Louisiana, with a serious interest in fashion and my friend, the author, a Louisiana girl too, who is head over heels in love with everything French and everything coffee, it was only fitting we pay tribute to our roots and our new found loves.
Tune in to KVPI every morning at 8:45AM (NY time) for your Cajun French lesson and come back to the blog every Friday for more French lessons from Mademoiselle Love. We will discuss useful French  words or expressions for the fashionable girl. But to make it even more enjoyable, we will do it over a very fashionable cup of coffee.
